All you need to know about Natural Stone

Updated: Apr 7, 2023

Natural stone adds instant beauty to any space. It will stand the test of time with its durability and strength. Each stone has unique and distinctive properties ensuring your project is an eye-catching work of art. Natural stone can be used anywhere inside or outside your home. Selecting your natural stone essentially comes down to three main points: the color, style, and cut.

Here at Big Rock we have many different natural stone products such as veneers, boulders, treads, flooring, flagstone, and fieldstone. These products have a wide range of applications such as flooring and walls for both indoor and outdoor use. They are great for walkways, patios, fireplaces and other accent pieces. The best part about natural stone is that regardless of project size, natural stone is always an excellent and diverse choice to feature.

Like all major projects, the most important thing to remember when selecting natural stone is what the end result should look like. Natural stone can replicate various styles whether modern, classic, formal, or a more rustic feel. Once you have an idea of what style you are looking for we can consider all of the options to make that vision happen. Our Sales Representatives are here to help guide you through the process by answering any questions or concerns you may have.

Out of our three main points, we suggest starting with the color palette. Our reps generally suggest knowing what color you’re going to have present already such as the trimming, shutters, siding, or other interior or exterior features. Feel free to bring in photos or samples of colors that you are wishing to match or compliment. We also like to suggest choosing a natural stone that will not limit you to a certain color range in case you think about changing what you currently have in your home in the future.

If you are going to be using brick and stone on your home, generally the most predominant one takes priority regarding color choice. If you have more natural stone then you want to select that color first, and then the brick. The color is the base for it all and once you have the colors we can piece everything else together.

If you would like to have natural stone on the outside and inside of your home, there are many different ways to make these designs correlate. Some like the flow to be the same from the outside to the inside, including backyard work such as patios, fireplaces, and pools. For others, that doesn’t matter so much. There are customers that prefer for the outside to look one way and the inside to look completely different. Your creativity can really run free here, so no matter what you decide we are sure you will be more than pleased with your natural stone selection.

Once the color is decided, it’s time to think about the style and cut that will work best for bringing the plans on paper to reality. When it comes down to the style and cut, we will need to consider choices such as mosaic, stacked, or an ashlar look. We can also add a thermal finish to any stone after cutting by adding moisture to the top and applying heat which gives the stone a more rustic and ‘unfinished’ look.

There is also the option to add sealers. Sealers won’t change the color, but more so enhance the natural colors at play. Some clients may choose to have mortar joints or a dry stacked look which hides any mortar from being displayed.

It’s important to think about if you are going to use a full-bodied stone or a thin-cut veneer stone. The different cuts are beneficial in certain circumstances. The representatives at Big Rock can help you decide if the heavier full-bodied stone is the way to go or if the thin cut veneer is more ideal. This depends on various factors like if your house is being currently built or if renovations are being made. That will have an impact on the weight of the stone that should be used.

There are plenty of elements to think about when it comes to a natural stone project, but we are here to help from start to finish. This is what we truly love at Big Rock and we are eager to exceed your expectations. Our reps are here to listen and give you options. We want nothing more than for you to be proud of your creation. Making our customers happy is what makes us happy. We look forward to seeing you at Big Rock and to begin working with you on your next project.
